Sankofa Education House

We aim to foster a mindset of growth through learning, living, and caring by activating our global community to expand education for a better tomorrow in Africa.

About Us

It started with our founder Nana Boakye, an avid traveler, deciding he make summer plans to go back home to Ghana. Nana moved to the United States in 1999 and pursued his studies in Education. Since graduating from Minnesota State University with a degree in English and Speech Education Masters in TESL, Boakye has taught many grade levels ranging from Middle School to High School as an ELL (English Language Learners) teacher.

While on summer vacation to visit his Grandma in the city of Kumasi, Nana saw a group of young children walking to school early in the morning who were going to the same school he once attended before immigrating to the United States. A conversation with Scales Prep School’s principal was the impetus of Sankofa Education House’s founding. Nana returned home determined to help the students and began by sourcing supplies from educators he worked with and other individuals in his community.

Calling on his community of friends, Boakye raised money to improve the lives of students with the collaborative efforts with the school leaders. It connecting a network of local entrepreneurs and resources to meet the specific needs of students.

What started as one person helping has turned into Sankofa Education House; a 501(c)(3) non-profit. We are working to enrich the classroom experience of students in Ghana by sourcing educational materials & providing financial support of essential projects. classrooms. All gifts are tax-deductible.

Our Name

San (return), Ko (go), Fa (look, seek and take)
We take our name from the Akan tribe in Ghana - Sankofa

The literal translation of the word and the symbol is

“go back to the past and bring forward that which is useful.”

The power of the word Sankofa centers around this phrase communicating; to know history and your heritage is to know your current self, the world around you, and how to better both.

Our organization is built upon this. That is why we work with school leaders to identify the specific needs of students to enrich and remove barriers to their education.
